Mosaic Courses

Did you know that we do vouchers for all of our courses? Ideal Christmas or birthday gifts for creative types!

The Studio

We run mosaic courses suitable for beginners and for those with some experience. You can choose from a one or half day beginners’ course, 2 day weekend courses, and weekly courses.

(We can run special courses for groups, by arrangement e.g. hen party, children’s birthday party. See below).

Gift Vouchers are available on request.

Our mosaic courses are taught by Frances Taylor, a mosaic artist with more than 10 years experience of running courses and workshops and making mosaics for public and private commissions.

We provide the materials, tools and equipment you will need, as well as drinks and biscuits.  All you need to bring is yourself, and a packed lunch, if you wish, for day and weekend courses (although there are many sandwich bars, cafés and pubs serving food, and a supermarket, all very close to our studios).

We limit the numbers to a maximum of 8 so that there is plenty of scope for asking questions and getting help and advice.

You will also get a worksheet with a list of mosaic suppliers, useful web sites etc.

Although we provide what you will need for each mosaic course, you are very welcome to bring with you any items you want to include in your mosaic (e.g. broken crockery, pebbles, glass beads, costume jewellery), and/or an item which you want to cover in mosaic. However, it is best to check with us first, just in case what you want to do requires special adhesives etc which we will have to order in advance, or in case what you want to do will not be suitable for the level of the course or the time available.

If you do not complete your mosaic in the time allocated, or if you need to grout it, you are welcome to come back at a later date, at no extra charge, to finish off your mosaic. If you are not able to do this we will give to materials/grout to take away with you

Please see the description of each course for contents. Please contact us if you are not sure which course would be most suitable for you.

THE RIVERSIDE STUDIO

The Mosaic Studio has now relocated, and is still in Otley, but no longer at The Woolpack. The Studio is  a working space, it can be a bit dusty, and also a bit chilly in cold weather, so please come dressed suitably.

Some of the mosaic courses involve using cement based adhesive and grout, which can be messy, and old clothing is definitely recommended!

Sandals are not a good idea when making mosaic – small sharp pieces of tile can get into them too easily!

We provide tea, coffee and biscuits. Otley is full of cafes, tea shops and pubs that serve food, so there is no shortage of choice, within a 5 minute walk,  if you want to eat lunch out, or get a takeaway sandwich etc

TESTIMONIALS

Anne, London  – 2 day weekend course: “I was a bit apprehensive about the mosaic workshop because I was rubbish at Art at school, but when you see all the lovely colours and shapes of tiles you can’t help but be inspired. Everyone got stuck into their own project with Frances helping, encouraging and supporting at every stage. The workshop is a lovely space – calm and light - and we spent a happy couple of days creating our own projects and admiring everyone else’s. I made a mosaic tray with a pattern of flowers and leaves and came away determined to give more space to my creative side in future.”

Annie, Leeds  – half day beginners’ course: “Had a thoroughly enjoyable afternoon + very proud of my finished product, which I get to keep and use as a memento of the day. Definitely looking forward to future courses and keeping my eye out for them!”

Christine, London  – 2 day weekend course: “The studio is set out so that there is lots of space to work, bright and airy and very friendly atmosphere. Frances, our tutor for the weekend, couldn’t have been better. She put people at ease and showed us lots of ideas, was very enthusiastic and creative and helped us all to produce outstanding mosaics. The whole weekend was brilliant. You don’t have to be artistic to be able to mosaic. Everyone should try it. It’s a great way to relax and lose yourself.”

Amy, Cheshire – 2 day weekend course : I took my 14-year-old daughter Polly with me and we joined a group of five other mosaic novices, all of different artistic abilities and all keen to try our hands at a new skill. After a demonstration from resident mosaic artist, Frances Taylor, we were let loose in the well-equipped studio with a huge range of precious gems, glass tiles and beads, as well as a library of books to guide the design process. There was plenty of encouragement and support on offer as we chose from a variety of objects to decorate, from mirror frames to small table-tops. The Woolpack studio is in the heart of Otley, a bustling market town, and I would recommend trying to combine a workshop with some serious sightseeing and walking in the area. Needless to say, Polly came away with a perfectly proficient work of art, whereas my final product was a somewhat chaotic riot of colour and shimmering stones, but we were both equally proud of ourselves and our works of art are now taking pride of place in our Cheshire home.”

Kara, Leeds –  half day beginners course: "To be honest I thought it might be interesting for an hour or so but that the nearby pub would soon beckon, I was wrong though and the hours flew by as I put together my mosaic. My main worry was getting it wrong and looking stupid but Frances was so enthusiastic and encouraging that I am now confident enough to plan my next project. The workshop itself is a beautiful space and very relaxed, you feel like you can treat the space like it is your own, not a stuffy classroom where you might be told off. I work hard and am always stressed but after the workshop I felt like I had been on a mini spa break! Seriously, I recommend this to everyone. Try it, you won't be disappointed!!"
